Doug Aitken’s Mirrored American House Installation in the Californian Desert

American artist Doug Aitken has designed a typical ranch style American House covered top-to-bottom in mirrors, in the desert outside Palm Springs. Titled the “Mirage” this sculpture is wrapped in a mirrored surfaces, which reflect the surroundings and camouflage the structure. This outdoor art installation and site-specific works are currently located in the Coachella Valley and its desert landscape.

“Mirage distils the recognizable and repetitious suburban home into the essence of its lines, reflecting and disappearing into the vast western landscape,” said the American artist. This exhibition is part of Desert X art festival, where 16 artists display they work across the arid landscape of the Coachella Valley.

Influence of the modernist ideas of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the American architecture from the after World War II  where “the ranch style’s streamlined simplicity gained popularity as commercial builders employed a simplified assembly line approach to creating this efficient form, matching the rapid growth of the suburbs,” said the artist.

“The mass-produced ranch home became a familiar sight across the country, the style filling the American landscape as quickly as each new subdivision was built.”

Inside, the reflective surfaces act like a kaleidoscopic inspiration, reflecting the vast, arid landscape and inducing a sense confusion rather than comfort. The mirrored house aspect changes throughout the day, creating a variety of unique experiences.

With its doors, windows, and openings removed to create a more fluid relationship its environment. The “ Mirage”  will remain on view through October 31, 2017.
