The most talked about gender transformation in recent years has to be Bruce Jenner’s reveal as Caitlyn Jenner, one that we’ve eared about for a long time but somehow never took serious, not until yesterday.

Vanity Fair chose Caitlyn Jenner to be the cover for it’s July issue, this marks an important statement not only for the renowned magazine but also a land mark in pop culture or what we are used to calling mainstream. We are talking about one of the most important fashion and notoriety venues in publishing history choosing a transexual as its cover, a decision that we’re sure wasn’t easy to make but it’s bound to be a game changer. The photographer chosen for this special occasion is none other than Annie Leibovitz, one the most renowned in the business and ultimately, we dare to say it, one of the best fashion photographers in the world. She took on the incredibly hard task of making Bruce Jenner’s new persona look beyond good, Caitlyn Jenner actually looks amazing for a 65 year old man turned woman, but it’s also a shoot filled with truth, one of Leibovitz’s trademarks are the eyes of her subjects, they always stand out amidst the high production values.

Her makeup was done by Mark Carrasquillo, an industry veteran who frequently works with Vogue and Allure, and has done the makeup for Richard Chai, Hussein Chalayan, Etro, and more, and her hair was by Oribe, who has been a celebrity stylist (and a mastermind on dozens of Allure covers) for decades. Deborah Lippmann, another frequent Allure and Vogue contributor, painted Jenner’s nails a classic red.

Jenner tells Vanity Fair contributor Buzz Bissinger that “the uncomfortableness of being me never leaves all day long. I’m not doing this to be interesting. I’m doing this to live.” She reveals that while she is not going to have genital surgery, she did have facial feminization surgery, which took ten hours. Shortly afterward, she suffered her first panic attack and thought to herself, What did I just do? What did I just do to myself? A counselor from the Los Angeles Gender Center came to her home to calm her.

Jenner told Bissinger that she receives supportive letters every day from people all over the world. She’s also looking forward to experiencing life as a woman with other women and throwing “girls’ night” parties on a regular basis. “You can talk about anything you want to talk about. You can talk about outfits. You can talk about hair and makeup, anything you want,” says Jenner. “It becomes not a big deal.”
