Known for his bold, unconventional designs for the likes of Veuve Clicquot, Samsung, and Alessi, Rashid worked with company founder Erik Lindström to develop Korgamy, a series of angular patterns inspired by the Cubist movement.

“Korgamy has reinvented that style. Triangular geometric rugs aren’t anything new. But taking a century-old style of art and applying it, in conjunction with a modern approach, to formulate an original idea is,” explains Lindström.

It was considered one of the best products of Milan Design Week 2015, that happened between the 14 and 19 of April.

Some of the chosen ones will be still running during Expo Milano 2015, the International Exhibition that will be hosted in Italy’s design and commerce capital from May 1 to October 31, 2015. That will be exposed the best and most innovative design products of this event.

For the second year in a row, the usual design districts (Tortona, Lambrate, Brera and the sprawling RHO Fiera with its endless halls of Salone Internazionale del Mobile) were joined by the new 5VIE district, with paths that incorporated beautiful shops, archaeological finds and courtyards in historical buildings and the ‘Exercises in seating’ exhibition dedicated to the work of the British designer/sculptor Max Lamb organised by Federica Sala.

The architectural shoe exhibition ‘re-inventing shoes’ highlights five exclusive 3D-printed shoes, conceived by a select group of the worlds leading architects and designers: ben van berkel, fernando romero, michael young, ross lovegrove and zaha hadid.

The select group of high heels embody an overall investigation and exploration into the union of wearable design, functionality, production methods, aesthetics and technology and using the highest quality of 3D printing — selective laser sintering — in a hard nylon and all-new soft rubber material in their realization. each shoe presented for ‘re-inventing shoes’ is available as a up to 50 pair limited edition. ‘Re-inventing shoes’ is on show at teatro arsenale, via c. correnti 11 within the 5vie art + design quarter during milan design week 2015.

Architect and world economic forum ‘global leader of tomorrow’ fernando romero has conceived ‘ammonite’ for united nude, a shoe that uses the most cutting-edge 3D printing technology, yet results in an organically shaped object that could have been found in nature, like a fossil buried on the bottom of the ocean.

Intertwined in the design are the old and the new, natural and man-made and the connection between the human body, the earth, and the universe — working together to become simultaneously timeless and forward-looking. Intricately formed geometries have been printed in red, with mathematically-informed compositions creating a delicate, cosmic spiral that meets at the intersection of architecture, art, and design.

The design features flame-like bands that start from the heel and extend upwards to embrace the foot, with an ergonomically-optimized foot bed providing comfort and support for the wearer. Hadid’s architectural language and united nude’s expertise in manufacturing join forces in the creation of a shoe that embodies both a sculptural sensibility and experimentation of technology — highlighting the essence of fire: delicate and ephemeral, yet compelling and dynamic.

CTRLZAK presents a contemporary take on the traditional hourglass

Among the first instruments that man perceived to measure time, the milan-based collective’s apparent hourglass utilizes the properties of traditional materials in reviewing this almost obsolete object. A mouth-blown borosilicate glass vessel provides transparency, while refined iron fillings trickle from one compartment to another. The contemporary design reveals the passage of time not only through movement, but through the creation of a small crystalline structure — revealing that time is not only obvious to the observer as a continuous motion, but through materials which can help visualize and make its passing something physical. Secondome is also showcasing pieces produced with padiglione italia, and the final pieces of the ‘from-to’ collection organized by martino gamper for valore artigiano.

During Milan Design Week 2015, leading manufacturer of premium quartz surfaces, caesarstone, presents ‘movements’ — an interactive installation that combines an eight-piece swing-set and a collection of handmade planters conceived by Philippe Malouin. Positioned within the historic palazzo serbelloni, ‘movements’ is divided into two parts, each of which explores the unexpected application of the caesarstone material, and its distinctive textures, in process-based design.

The first of the two parts, the swings, are placed within the palace’s grand hall. typically associated with carefree, childish activity, they are removed from their original playground surroundings — the historical setting bringing an out-of-context element into play, inviting visitors to interact with the work.

‘For me the starting point was the exploration of the material, as we tend to start most projects. we therefore focused on spending time in the workshop, except, this was not an ordinary workshop, but a fully equipped solid surface transformation facility. caesarstone is an extremely versatile material that is easy to predict and work with, and it offers a variety of colors and finishes. I therefore experimented with a series of techniques and applications ranging from the mundane to the more experimental.’ – Philippe Malouin

Malouin’s installation is the third in a series of collaborations that caesarstone is engaging in with international designs, asking them to explore the premium stone material in new ways. his work follows nendo’s stone garden which looks at how caesartone can be applied to furniture, and raw edges’ ‘islands’ which expresses the use of caesarstone as a surface and its potential use within the domestic domain.

‘For our third large-scale presentation in milan, we were interested in delving into philippe malouin’s unique approach to product design, so that the qualities unique to caesarstone material – such as strength and flexibility, are explored in a thoroughly new way.’ – eli feiglin, VP of marketing at caesarstone
