This time, a new installation of work by the Mexican artist Bosco Sodi in going to be unveiled at the Shelborne Hotel. The hotel’s art-collecting owners, Paul and Dayssi Kanavos, have acquired five of Sodi’s glistening gold Rock sculptures and put them on permanent display for the enjoyment of their guests.

Bosco Sodi’ tells how it all begun:“I take 10 guys with me to the volcano of Ceboruco near Guadalajara and we choose a rock and then pull it out of the volcano with ropes,” he says. Subsequently, the rocks are painted red and then finished with solid gold. “I like the idea of bringing something from the mountain and converting it into something precious, into an object of desire.”

Sodi also spends time most months in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, where last year he opened an art foundation, Casa Wabi, that is part artist retreat and part community arts facility.

Casa Wabi has so far been a success. “It’s very relaxed, it doesn’t privilege the idea of the artist and it’s a very long way from the art world,” says Sodi. “Prices are so crazy now in the art market, and I often wonder why I’m paid so much to do something I love. So it’s nice to give something back.”

Each season, the MAISON & OBJET Observatoire de la Maison decodes our times and analyzes new consumption behaviors to define a theme explored in the Inspirations book and staged at the show. The MAISON & OBJET Observatoire de la Maison invites you to sink your teeth into the PRECIOUS theme, by discovering the new Inspirations forum.

Precious and preciousness are expressed in many ways. The word immediately evokes cut stones and their mysterious settings, raw materials rendered more beautiful still by the genius of man. In art, precious entails a character of great delicacy, brilliance, even wealth. It is often linked to gold, mirrors and ornaments.

But, while all that is valuable is precious, preciousness does not hold the same value for everyone. From somewhat trivial affectation to the very essence of life, preciousness inspires dialogue between excessive materiality and the most extreme fragility.

The Missions

In 2002, MAISON&OBJET created an «Observatoire de la Maison» which catalogues new trends in consumption and emerging lifestyles.

During their work meetings, the members of the Observatoire bring together their striking discoveries, their emotions and their intuitions about emerging lifestyles. This time of collegial brainstorming helps define a topic as the running theme of the season. Emotions, Desires, Secret, Luxuries, Use, Intensity, the themes refer to major, all-encompassing trends and not the whims of fashion.
The theme is developed in 3 modes: the Inspirations film, the Inspirations itinerary, the Inspirations book.

The models showcased at the exhibition are organised into sub-sections, each reflecting the study of a particular aspect of the building such as contexts, programme, design process, interior spaces, icebergs and glass sails.

To Gehry, the Fondation building represents a “‘magnificent vessel that symbolises France’s profound cultural vocation”.

XL and Donson, the two friends behind FAKEDCANDID, craft their inspiration through the looking glass of stylish mannerisms and a fashionable approach, as seen in the campaign they created for independent clothing label’s SOMEWHERE NOWHERE SS15 collection.

Paint Job, the brightly coloured canny vision that they dreamed up for the label, is full of innuendos, leaning on each side of tragedy and comedy where tools and objects hint at the presence of a painter, through implications of him suffocating, being squashed, or maybe wounded. Subtle clues and unsuspecting bright colours are masterfully placed, eager to either guide or mislead our imagination, depending on the angle in which we choose to look at FAKEDCANDID’s playful narration.

Shadow, balance, rhythm, lightness, freedom, warmth, chaos and fire: just some of the words that have been poetically redefined through the beautiful light-portraiture photography of the latest ‘RITRATTI’ catalogue by Italian light manufacturer Foscarini (founded on Murano Island in Venice, Italy, in 1981 and now run by designer Carlo Urbinati). More coffee-table book than commercial catalogue, the creative project RITRATTI (the word means ‘portraits’ in Italian) was presented to a selected group of journalists at the end of March 2015 in Venice, Italy.

But first, let me take you a back in time, to 2010 to be exact, the year that another Foscarini project was born. NamedINVENTARIO — a bookzine edited by Italian author and architect Beppe Finessi, art directed by Artemio Croatto/Designwork and published by Corraini Edizioni, its objective was not only to put ideas into order but to relayFoscarini’s values.  Ιf you’ve ever had the chance to get your hands on an a copy of INVENTARIO (you can order it fromhere), it’s easy to see why it recently won the 2014 ADI Compasso d’Oro Award, one of the most prestigious design awards in the world.

The abovementioned ‘killer team’ was recruited once again with the objective of creating a new Foscarini catalogue, an idea that was conceived a year ago when Carlo Urbinati, Foscarini’s founder, decided that the company needed a change, a new beginning. This signified the start of a creative process that delved into imagining what Foscariniwould look like if it was born today, mainly through revisiting the company’s archives. The result: the RITRATTI book, a photographic project that interprets the many souls of Foscarini lamps, as they are captured lit in different environments, beautifully exposing their forms and light spectrum. At this point allow me to recall the neon tubes by Maurizio Nannucciinstalled in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum’s garden in Venice, since I believe they perfectly sum up Carlo Urbinati’s vision:

”Changing Place, Changing Time, Changing Thoughts, Changing Future”.

And speaking of change, this brilliant catalogue — which was shot in five different palazzos in Rimini, Vicenza,Thiene, Verona and Milano as well as inside the Arsenale di Venezia — depicts an aspect of Foscarini which has been hidden in the shadows until now… The catalogue of course owes much of its success to the impeccable style direction of architect Elisa Ossino and the talent of interior photography masters Tommaso Sartori, Andrea Ferrari andKasia Gatkowska. In a text contained in the RITRATTI book, contributor Attilio Stocchi states that ‘‘carrying your shadow with you is the most beautiful voyage’’ a shadow which for Foscarini, is of course none other than their venerable 30 years of experience, innovation and great design.

The budget of the richman The Wolf of Wall Street contrasted with the top underdogs Nebraska, also nominated to the best movie. However, it seems Chiwetel Ejiofor was tired of its life of slavery, breakin’ it up to win the the Best Movie Award.
