Metamorphosis Table Maison et Objet What’s New for Maison et Objet Paris in September? Boca do Lobo Returns to Maison et Objet to Present Metamorphosis Table 3

Metamorphosis Dining Table has come to symbolize the evolutionary history of life, representing the last stage of the cycle through the usage of sculpted fossils on display at the top of the table. It also represents the effort made by our designers to questioning the existence of things, by answering a simple and basic question: “How can we define something as living?”

Created for Czech lighting brand Lasvit, the Fungo chandelier was influenced by the shapes of mushrooms growing on wood.

An ancient glassblowing mould in the basement of the company’s factory had succumbed of humidity and was found covered in fungi. The Campana brothers used this as a starting point for their design. “When we went to the Lasvit glassworks in Lindava, we visited their basement where the wooden moulds used to create the shapes of their glass pieces are stored,” said Fernando Campana. “We noticed a kind of mushroom that grows on them thanks to the humidity. This scenery inspired us to create this piece.”

The chandelier has six arms, made from sections of wood that alternate between solid pieces and pairs of slats. The batons are arranged so each is angled slightly at the overlapping joint, creating a jagged curve to the branches. Glass bulbs that appear flattened and crinkled are sandwiched between the wooden slats positioned vertically, where the LEDs are also held. “Our main purpose is to create a shock between the formal rigidity of the chandelier’s wooden structure and the pieces of glass that seem to spontaneously germinate from the wood,” said Humberto Campana. The piece is hung from a length of rope, which attaches to the ceiling via a hexagonal sconce.

The brothers regularly use natural forms and materials in their work . They previously created an indoor “forest” of flax and wood for an exhibition in Sweden, and produced a cabinet from the skin of the world’s largest freshwater fish. “Our work has always been inspired by nature, and we wanted to mix it with Lasvit’s tradition and to fuse their techniques with natural materials,” Fernando said.

The Fungo Chandelier was first launched in 2015. Lasvit will exhibit the design at Maison&Objet, set to take place at the Nord Villepinte exhibition centre outside Paris from 22 to 26 January 2016, along with a set of crystal-shaped lamps by Jan Plecháč and Henry Wielgus. The brand’s collection of glass lighting also includes designs by Nendo, Arik Levy, Maarten Baas and Daniel Libeskind.

“The 2016 Collection is named after my recently published book, ‘Walking on Art’, and is an evolution of the 2015 Illusion collection.   There are nine designs, which feature blocks of colour grading and chunks of silk, integrated in a way that will play on light.  I have combined strong and subtle tonal contrasts to create optical illusions and added drama through splashes of unexpected colour”, said Deirdre Dyson.

One of the techniques that makes Deirdre Dyson’s treatments so special is her sophisticated use of colour grading.  Thanks to her fine art experience, Deirdre is able to perfectly judge the variation of different shades in order to achieve a smooth transition that makes the hues run smoothly into one another.

Carpets can be fitted or free-standing.  Different production methods are used to suit both budget and space.  Hand-knotted carpets are made from luxurious wool or a tactile combination of wool and silk.  Alternative methods include tufting for fitted carpeting and pass machine for larger (commercial) spaces – both types of production are carried out in the UK, still creating unique designs.

The new RM 07-02, nicknamed the Pink Lady Sapphire, is actually a giant gem. The watch housing is carved from a large pink sapphire studded in diamonds and trimmed in 18-karat rose gold. The piece is one of the most detailed and complicated designs the company has ever created and is priced at £678,571 (approx. USD $1.03 million).

Richard Mille has been producing a select number of men’s watches in clear sapphire crystal since 2012 when they debuted their first sapphire-cased watch. Since then, sapphire crystal-cased watches from Richard Mille have commanded prices in excess of one million dollars, going up to over two million dollars.

According to Richard Mille, the machining of sapphire crystal cases has been their “toughest challenge yet,” which is a lot coming from a company whose unstated mission is to push the limits of modern luxury watch technology and performance to new levels no matter the price or effort required. Richard Mille states that the case for this new Richard Mille RM 07-02 Pink Lady Sapphire Automatic watch required over 40 days and almost 800 hours to machine properly. The hardness of sapphire crystal (which is pretty much only second to diamond) is so tough that properly machining the necessary angles, curves, and shape of the distinct tonneau-style Richard Mille case is treacherously complicated (and actually wasteful, as so many machine parts need to be constantly replaced).

Once Richard Mille has a finished sapphire crystal case, it is quite an accomplishment because enough of them don’t even survive the milling processes. While sapphire is extremely hard, it is also totally inflexible, meaning that the right pressure can cause it to crack – so the failure rate when machining is probably quite high. Other than the o-rings used to ensure water resistance, the case of the pink sapphire Richard Mille 07-02 watch is held together with grade 5 titanium spline screws.

At 32.9mm wide and 46.75mm long, the elongated barrel-shape of the Richard Mille RM 07-02 Pink Lady watch case is eminently feminine, despite the presence of what might normally be considered masculine touches with Richard Mille’s signature high-tech industrial look that relishes exposing as much of the mechanical construction as possible. In pink, this sapphire crystal case offers a much more distinctive look than the majority of luxury watches out there in materials such as gold or platinum. At least for now, there is a built-in degree of exclusivity, as no one else out there has a competitive product. Of course, given the retail price and theme of the RM 07-02 Pink Lady Sapphire, Richard Mille has imbued the design with diamonds.
