Gargoyle-covered skyscraper for New York is proposed by Mark Foster Gage http://www.bocadolobo.com/en/news-and-events/architecture/gargoyle-covered-skyscraper-new-york-proposed-mark-foster-gage/ http://www.bocadolobo.com/en/news-and-events/architecture/gargoyle-covered-skyscraper-new-york-proposed-mark-foster-gage/#comments Mon, 14 Dec 2015 18:43:23 +0000 http://www.bocadolobo.com/en/news-and-events/?p=3102 New York architect Mark Foster Gage has proposed a 102-storey tower covered in Gothic sculptural elements for Manhattan, in response to the city’s supertall skyscrapers that are “virtually free of architectural design” (+ movie).

The highly decorative residential building for West 57th Street was redisgend by Foster Gage as an alternative to the more conventional skyscrapers currently springing up in Midtown.

“I think that many of the supertall buildings being built in New York City are virtually free of architectural design – they are just tall boxes covered in selected glass curtain wall products,” said Foster Gage, who serves as assistant dean at the Yale School of Architecture.

“That is not design,” he added. “Design is thinking of a great many things like how a building appears from different distances, or in this case, how to make each floor unique to the owner.”

“How to make it more than just floor-space in the sky but also something beautiful and hopefully more meaningful to them and the city.”

His proposal features four enormous cantilevered balconies, supported by concrete carved wings that extend outwards from the structure’s exterior.

Intricate details cover the tower: limestone-tinted concrete sculptures resemble the fronts of cars and propellers, while others serve as unconventional gargoyles.

The building is also decorated with symmetrical geometric shapes, placed on all four sides. Foster Gage has suggested robotic CNC technology could be used to create the carvings.

Bronze and brass decorative details extend up the tower, and have been used to create cog-shaped elements at the base and curved sections that echo the forms of the wings further up the building.

At the top of the tower, a viewing platform is framed by sculptural metal details, including what appear to be the faces of pig-like creatures at each corner.

“Our primary interest wasn’t symbolism as might have been the case with such sculptural forms a century ago,” said the architect.

“Instead we were interested in having high and low resolution areas on the facade, so the building revealed different qualities from different viewing distances – including from the interior,” he added.

The architect explain that visitors will also be able to visit a restaurant that would offer “an awe-inspiring event and dining experience unique to the city of New York”.

According to the architect, each of the apartments in the building will also have its own unique sculptural exterior, designed to “frame particular features of the surrounding urban and natural landscapes”.

Other proposed designs for new towers for the city include ODA’s residential tower with open-air terraces, and Dror Benshetrit’s trio of proposals for residential buildings on different sites of New York.

However some New Yorkers have spoken out against the rise in super-tall skinny skyscrapers, claiming they could overshadow Central Park.

Called The Bryant, the 33-storey building, which will contain apartments and a hotel, is rising across the street from Bryant Park in midtown .

Rectilinear in form, the high-rise building will be composed by gridded facade clad in precast concrete terrazzo panels, speckled with marble and sandstone chips.

“I think you can make architecture out of very simple things, it doesn’t have to be complicated,” said David Chipperfield. “The difference between a good building and a bad building normally resides in it being more thought about.”

“The idea that the structure and the facade are the same thing, made out of polished concrete, will give the building a tectonic and physical presence,” added the architect.

“Through this, the building is reduced down to elements of columns and windows, of solid and void, mass and space.”

Chipperfield’s project is being constructed on the last available lot on Bryant Park, on a site that was formerly a parking lot.

The popular 9-acre (3.6 hectares) park is ringed by historic high-rise buildings and borders the Beaux Art-style Stephen A Schwarzman Building, which houses the New York Public Library. The Empire State Building park and the city skyline are part of the tower’s views.

The design embodies an “intelligent simplicity,” which is a hallmark of Chipperfield’s work, said the developer, New York-based HFZ Capital Group.

It will contain a 230-room boutique hotel on floors two to 15, with retail space and a restaurant at ground level. Floors 15 to 34 will house 57 residential units, including two triplex penthouses.

Apartments will offer up to five bedrooms, with prices ranging from $2 million (£1.3 million) to upward of $10 million (£6.5 million). Sales for The Bryant launched this week.

“The building’s custom-made aggregate terrazzo facade transitions seamlessly into the carefully considered interiors, creating crisp architectural frames to the multiple windows in each residence, as well as a border for the warm-toned herringbone floors,” said the developer.

Each residence will have bespoke millwork designed by Chipperfield that “cleverly conceals storage, appliances, and mechanical systems, and allows for generous, uninterrupted ceiling heights throughout the living spaces and hallways”.

Kitchens and bathrooms have hand-selected Italian marble finishes. Other features include floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors, and at least one corner exposure.

“The Bryant is the embodiment of elegant, purposeful design and unparallelled centrality,” said the developer. “This new landmark is sure to become one of the most desired addresses in all of Manhattan.

Completion is slated for the spring of 2017. Chipperfield is no newcomer to New York. He designed the Bryant Park Hotel in 2001, which entailed the conversion of the 1924 American Radiator Building.

He also recently oversaw the renovation of the Takashimaya Building and designed the Manhattan flagship store for the fashion house Valentino, which is located inside the building.

A “naive” spirit is the perfect word to describe the amazing paitings of Jonas Wood.It will be at Art Basel with David Kordansky Gallery. You can see the spirit of the artist through the painting that we should you above.

Mary Weatherford’s paintings with affixed strips of glowing neon caught people’s eye at the exhibition “The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World,” at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in December 2014, and Los Angeles’ David Kordansky Gallery hopes to build on that momentum with a stormy black canvas with blue and red vertical neon strips.

William Kentridge’s show “The Refusal of Time” at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art last year turned a lot of heads; the New York Times’ Holland Cotter called it “audience pleasing in the best, challenging sense.” In Basel, New York/Paris/London dealer Marian Goodman offers sculptures and works on paper by the South African artist. She’s known for dramatic presentations at fairs, having turned over a Frieze New York booth to a performance by Tino Sehgal. She’ll also offer work from her international roster, including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lawrence Weiner, and Yang Fudong.

Björk’s MoMA exhibtion, an amazing, colorful and unprejudiced art exhibition, where your your values, feelings and reality will be pushed forward how they never were. Björk’s MoMA exhibtion is also pushing the limits of imagination, art and culture.

There’s the Björk’s world.

The exhibit is at its core, quite unremarkable. Critics have used much hyperbole over the last week to creatively dismiss the exhibit.  Some criticisms  came afloat mentioning  that Björk’s MoMA exhibit is boring, and boring is both a major disservice to the artist and her legions of fans. Never has anything felt boring about Björk.

The brand new open minded exhibition in New York - Björk’s MoMA Retrospective The brand new open minded exhibition in New York - Björk’s MoMA Retrospective 315

Instantly, the exhibit is disappointing. It’s not even isolated enough from the rest of the museum to really come off as anything truly monumental. There are Björk’s notebooks where you can identify their songs as they appeared in their first forms. Critics say that is not visually stunning, by any means. It is said that there were a few beautiful pieces, but these pieces had all been seen before.
