Dash Marshall Hushes New York Hustle with Soothing Design Project

New York is the city that never sleeps. Its pace demands a lot from who inhabits its streets, work, traffic, waiting lines, crowds, noise, pollution… There is nothing like having your own private oasis to shelter you from all this New York hustle. Dash Marshall had that in mind when working on the Tambour Loft, a soothing and calm design project which keeps the fast pace of the Big Apple outside.

Founded by Amy Yang, Ritchie Yao, and Bryan Boyer in 2009, Dash Marshall is a New York based design firm that believes that architecture and interior design can improve our cities, and that they should be ever evolving. Design can inspire beauty, but it can also help us live, work and be more involved with the world around us. That is why Dash Marshall built a multi-disciplinary design firm, so they can work towards this ambition of a more effective and holistic design.

Their design projects are the embodiment of this all-inclusive vision, and they try to challenge the contemporary design practice by acting on this matter. Tambour Loft is a pied-à-terre for a young professional couple who wanted a quiet place to ‘hide’. The design firm created spaces with curved surfaces and multiple textures throughout to hush the hustle of New York and create an interior of calm and relaxation.

Following the couple’s daily rituals and routines, Dash Marshall created a central kitchen that opens onto a wide space, with adjacent dining and reading zones in an open floor plan. The spaces are differentiated with texture and materials, instead of the common use of walls. The pastel tones associated to the architectural features of the rooms make of this contemporary design project a unique inspiration!

The lounge/living room area is another key point of this design project, it is where industrial and contemporary design meet. The raw and exposed brick walls provide that industrial look which counterpoints to the tambour surfaces.

The design project is minimalist with touches of bespoke elements. There is art by Pamela Jordan courtesy of Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery and furnishings by Pendants by Ladies & Gentlemen Studio. Lighting seems to play an important role in this work, which is why Kugler Ning Lighting was chosen to be the lighting consultant.

Dash Marshall achieved a beautiful balance between their vision and the client’s needs in this Tambour Loft. The homage to the owner’s Chinese heritage and the subtle curves throughout the home, provide a consistent and cohesive design language which make of this unique design project a true inspiration!
