Clements Design: Great Minds Combine

Clements Design is a team of interior designers and one of the most renowned in Los Angeles. Kathleen Clementsthe mother – and Tommy Clementsthe son – have built their powerhouse interior design firm by designing multi-layered, finely curated, and eminently livable homes for a star-studded customer list, where you can find names like Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Bruno Mars, and many others.

What began as Kathleen‘s retail antique and custom furniture store in New Orleans, has evolved into the full-service design firm it is today. Tommy, who has been a partner, joined Clements Design, having previously managed sales and marketing at Architectural Digest. Clements Design is known for its gallery-like, nature-inspired interiors filled with carefully selected rustic antiques so spare in their lines that they almost resemble sculptures.

Clients say the dynamic is the best of both generations. Kathleen‘s practices are old-school as well as Tommys taste – yet he offers a fresher, youthful perspective that Kathleen‘s stylistic expertise can deliver. And as close as mother and son are, Tommy says they have very different approaches to design.

Clements Design stunned with projects as diverse as a mid-century modern design or a renovation of a 1930s Georgian house. Tommy admits that he can really get obsessed with the little things and all the little design details, while his mother has a much more macro perspective, she always considers the big picture and believes there still has to be something unexplainable, even magical, to give a home its character and soul. A mother-and-son duo that does not always think alike, however, their minds truly combine!

“From the moment Tommy and I began working together, we have always collaborated. We have a very similar sense of style, but each of us expresses our style in a unique way (…). That’s not to say we don’t disagree, but generally, the disagreements ramp up the creativity.”

Tommy Clements recalls how, as a child, his mother was always renovating or furnishing new houses for the family as they moved every few years. He also remembers being very aware that each house had a very unique feel when it was done and he always tried to understand why.

“I think that’s when I started to understand the importance of scale, layout and color palette, and to appreciate how the architecture of a house affects the composition of its spaces.”

Clements Design studies the client’s personal narrative, fits it into the architectural context, and brings the story to life with understated elegance. As Kathleen, the differences between mother and son are not the central point here. Despite everything, they think together and thus bond. What about the results? Their work together speaks for itself.
