The cooperation between the chain Proper Hotel and the interior designer Kelly Wearstler always leads to the most striking projects! Austin Proper Hotel has been created in a location so unique in Texas that it is entirely representative of Kelly‘s well-known style.
The sculptural structure of Austin Proper Hotel & Residences spans 32 floors and combines a 244-room hotel with 99 exclusive residences. Located in the cultural crossroads of Austin‘s downtown Second Street District, the project is the result of a visionary collaboration between designers Kelly Wearstler, Handel Architects and McGuire Moorman Hospitality.
The lakeside building is set amongst Austin’s creative hub, with Kelly Wearstler’s creative direction considering site-specific influences from traditions of artistry and craftsmanship unique to the Texan capital. The layered, individualistic interior takes cues from Austin’s most stately luxury homes.
Eye-catching details include a sculptural stairwell installation of 60 patched vintage rugs and a monolithic wood-and-ceramic grandfather clock in the lobby of Kelly Wearstler‘s boutique hotel. Surfaces provide interesting texture, with local artists and materials playing an important role. These include pots, trays and inlaid tiles by ceramicist Rick Van Dyke, locally quarried travertine on the pool deck, Delta wood paneling, native elmwood and antique mirror surfaces.
Each of the 244 rooms and suites has Austin as its muse and is heavily influenced by local craftsmanship, from raw travertine from nearby quarries to original fiber art from Magda Sayeg and trays from Rick Van Dyke. Branded products include Kelly Wearstler x Parachute Home bathrobes and Proper beds upholstered in Simmons Providence Mattresses, Fili D’oro and Bellino Fine Linens.
