Tollgard Design Group is an interior design studio and a respected curator of contemporary international design. With three London showrooms and a dedicated team for commercial commissions, the company aims to add value at every stage of a design journey. A new family oasis has been created on one of Notting Hill‘s most iconic garden spots.

Working with Capital Architects and developer Thornsett, the classic Notting Hill house has been completely refurbished and a new basement has been added to the already generous footprint.

The team created a livable, modern family home over five floors that maintains an appropriate seriousness and formality in some of the key entertaining areas, while carefully concealing all the comforts of modern living.

On the ground floor, the scene is set with a palette of dark herringbone floors, bespoke joinery and dramatic sculptural pendant lights. On the family floor below, however, the atmosphere is brighter and more tropical, as the open kitchen, dining and living rooms extend into the private garden area beyond. One floor below, the cinema and wine room create intimate and cozy spaces. The top three floors feature a luxurious master suite and four additional bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

“We are great believers in honest luxury and the power of a good story. This home uses solid, valuable materials in a clean, architectural and truthful way – and the outcome is refreshingly authentic. There is drama and impact in the rooms that need this energy, but we temper this with cleaner, quieter, purer materials.”

In the master bathroom, the interplay between the highly pronounced Fiori di Bosco and the clean lines of the Corian bathtub and sink is vibrant and engaging. This dialog between materials is reflected and repeated in other areas of the house to create a strong thread.

True to its location Notting Hill, the house thrives on dramatic discourse, on the energy of contrasts, between the old and the new. Natural stone, parquet flooring and deep cornices meet modern ceramics and Corian, laser-cut aluminum and crystal clear glass. The natural vibrancy of the garden cuts into the serene architectural palette at every level, adding life and colour to the space.
