The chic contemporary furniture and lighting emerging from small, high-end Portuguese design brands has been an insider secret in the design industry for a year or so. Now a number of these creative young companies are surfacing from under the radar \u2013 not least because they\u2019ve found a splendid new showcase within Harrods\u2019s revitalised and much-expanded third-floor furniture department.<\/p>\n

What unites these brands is a commitment to re-imagining traditional shapes, materials and techniques. And the results are refreshing, glamorous and just a bit quirky. Take the Heritage sideboard by Boca do Lobo. This eye-catcher (\u00a317,959, first picture) resembles a row of irregularly sized books. Its fa\u00e7ade is clad in hand-painted ceramic tiles featuring historic Portuguese buildings, while the interior is lined with gold leaf. Both this engaging piece pushes contemporary furniture design in intriguing new directions.<\/p>\n

Further standout pieces in the new Harrods Is Home campaign include Koket\u2019s glamorous Divine cabinet (\u00a317,649), while Delightfull\u2019s Amy table lamp (\u00a31,149, fourth picture) offers a new twist on a furniture staple. This tribute to the late British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse has a shapely black aluminium shade that references her beehive hairstyle and a brass base resembling a microphone stand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of talent and creativity emerging around the Porto area, with young Portuguese brands bringing a modern twist to classic designs,\u201d says Annalise Quest, Harrods\u2019s director of home. \u201cThese pieces are designed to make a statement; some are almost like artworks. And as people increasingly look for provenance, craftsmanship and a backstory when buying furniture, we think they will be very excited by these designs.\u201d<\/p>\n
