The Brazilian architect and top interior designer Guilherme Torres transformed this house from the 70s in São Paulo into a colorful, luminous and very warm gallery that embraces the best of Brazilian art and design.
When Guilherme Torres was selected to do this home design project, the reform was almost done. A functional construction was found with a modern living room in two heights and large windows that opened onto a tropical garden, with white walls and stone floors.
“They knew my work for the housing of some of their friends that at that moment was finishing, and they hired me to decorate, in principle, the living room, the dining room and the master bedroom, but I have put my hand in all the rooms”.
For the home decor, he didn’t start from scratch, the owners had already bought some pieces. “Of course they did not want to get rid of them, so we followed the guidelines that marked the modern furniture they already had, like the armchairs Amoebe by Verner Panton or a couple of sofas from Dpot, so that they could cohabit with those we would contribute.”
“Although people think otherwise, in Brazil it is avoided in private homes because it is not considered elegant, it is as if it were scary. I totally disagree: well-employed brings seriousness and sophistication. ”
So he introduced contemporary designs from the 60s of the great national masters, such as the blue chairs in the bar area of Jorge Zalszupin or the dining room in a strong orange by Sérgio Rodrigues, a tapestry by Roberto Burle Marx and the rotundas Saber armchairs by Carlos Motta along with current ones signed by Ingo Maurer or by the architect’s own studio.
“Our goal was to create a kind of gallery where you could live,” continues Guilherme. The owners are collectors and they trusted him to compose a vibrant space in which the design furniture did not detract from his contemporary works of art.
“In addition to other objects that I simply like, that do not follow any rule or decorative trend,” he concludes. In this project, he has created an easy, happy and fresh set.
