This reformed modern loft in Manhattan shows no trace of its former rough-around-the-edges look. Interior designers Amanda Jesse and Whitney Parris-Lamb transformed the space into a cozy family home with a substantial dose of glamour.
“The husband, Jason Gerstein, wanted a more traditional home that felt very comfortable,” recalls Jesse, “while his wife, Rachel, was drawn to something more dramatic and super-chic.

Kelly Wearstler’s Larchmont Chairs, upholstered in an exuberant Liberty of London floral fabric, have a starring role in the living area, which also features a modern curved-back sofa and a bespoke coffee table with a live-edge walnut top and a metal base.

The apartment’s home office is furnished with a leather-topped oak desk, a sculptural piece inspired by an antique.  When privacy is desired, floor-to-ceiling wool sateen drapes block out the views of the living area, and vice versa.

Straddling both doors is a chaise by Kevin Walz for Ralph Pucci, one of the first pieces purchased for the living area. “We all agreed it was amazing,” says Amanda Jesse. “And like the rest of the furniture here, which essentially floats in the room, it looks good from every angle.”

The semi-open kitchen has this sophistication but also looked modern.“It’s seriously luxe and even a little moody,” says client Rachel Gerstein. “Bright white kitchens are great, but that’s just not the vibe we wanted.”

A giant palm tree gifted by the contractor turned out to be a great piece, adding a hint of tropical to the elegant dining area. It plays well with the pink velvet chairs, which have a highly detailed gilded frame, and the midcentury-style brass pendant.

While most of the apartment displays a very polished elegance, the master bedroom decor is relaxed and even slightly bohemian. “The clients wanted this space to be serene and cozy,” says Amanda Jesse.
