C<\/em>ovetED Magazine had recently the amazing opportunity to interview<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the top interior designer,<\/strong> Jessica Gersten. <\/strong>The designer\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>has worked in the fashion industry for several years, the designer<\/strong> grew an awareness for colors, fabrics, and proportion. In 2008, Gersten founded her own interior design<\/strong> company and through a modern eclectic style<\/strong>, she manages to masterfully combine the use of neutral base colors and organic shapes, as well as ethnic patterns and textures while adding layers of mid-century lighting<\/strong>, bold sculptures<\/strong>, and modern furniture design<\/strong>s. And these are just some of the reasons why her style projects a sense of distinctiveness and versatility.<\/p>\n

\nJessica Gersten:<\/strong>\u00a0I absolutely LOVE this job. It was a ground-up construction and a huge 100,000 square feet. Each room is so special and so well thought out. I love being a designer because I get into the minds of my clients and try to bring joy and comfort into the home.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0Do you have a favorite project or story about one of your projects?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Tenafly is hands down my favorite. \u00a0It\u2019s my largest and most passion-filled. [all pictures on this article belong to this project]<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Chemistry is everything. It\u2019s like dating! If we have a great rapport and similar minds, the results are outstanding.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0Keeping up to date with all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market.\u00a0In what ways do you keep current with new trends?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Instagram is a major source of trends and staying current.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a>CM:<\/strong>\u00a0How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of \u201csignatures\u201d that help to identify your projects?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0I always have something with an organic feeling in all my projects. Free-form, organic shapes, and textures are my favorites. Whether a project is earthy or glamorous, I always have organic shapes included.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0All artists need some inspiration to work and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Anything can inspire. A piece of art, a single piece of fabric, any type of beautiful artisanship or architecture.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute it. Do you have some tips for those who do not really know how to start a challenge like this?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Start with a single piece that you love. \u00a0A rug, a table, a sofa. \u00a0If you are passionate about the starting piece, the rest will come. Keep adding on with the same passion.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0What are your favorite brands, those that can never be missed in one of your projects?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Minotti, M2L, B&B Italia, Kyle Bunting and, of course, Boca do Lobo and Covet Group.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0How did you get involved in the interior design industry?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0I had a passion for antiques. I came from a fashion background but spent all my time searching for antiques and helping my friends design their homes. \u00a0Then, I thought to try it as a business. Texture, proportion, color \u2013 all the same principals as fashion.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0What is your philosophy in design and life?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0There is always the feeling of a moment. Sometimes it\u2019s hard edge. Sometimes it\u2019s fluidity. Things just feel right when they feel right.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>CM:<\/strong>\u00a0How can you characterize your potential client?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Seeing their existing homes tells me a lot! And I always start a project by having clients show me pictures of what they \u201clove\u201d. That tells me what I need to know. Then it\u2019s a personality match.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0A beautiful prewar apartment on Central Park West in Manhattan. \u00a0Another home in Tenafly, NJ, but with a totally different feeling than that one.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0What is an interior design style you dislike?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0French country.<\/p>\n

CM:\u00a0<\/strong>Give me an example of an important goal you set for yourself and tell me about your progress in reaching that goal.
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0To get featured in a magazine. It just happened and I got the cover!<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0What has been the best career or life advice that you have received and what could you offer others?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Keep thinking ahead.<\/p>\n

CM:<\/strong>\u00a0What\u2019s next? Where do you see yourself and your firm in the next few years?
\nGersten:<\/strong>\u00a0Possibly extending into an online shopping venture.<\/p>\n
