Hand-painted tiles<\/strong>, also known as Azulejos<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, are an ancient art<\/strong> which involves a specific way of hand-painting<\/strong> tin-glazed ceramic tilework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azulejos<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>are currently one of the most representative forms<\/strong> of Craftsmanship<\/em><\/strong> in Portuguese culture, the hand-painted tiles reflect a tradition for hundreds of years<\/strong>. The Azulejo<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>is a clay or ceramic plate piece, generally with a square shape<\/strong>, decorated with glazed colorful designs<\/strong>. Most tiles show Moorish designs which have curvilinear, lacelike, and looping designs, or even geometric or floral motifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These techniques were introduced into Portuguese culture by king Manuel I<\/strong> after a visit to Seville in 1503. Applied to pavements and walls<\/strong>, this form of Craftsmanship<\/em> <\/strong>is now part of the Portuguese cultural identity<\/strong>. They usually evoke vital historical and mythical scenes from Portugal\u2019s past, so they are treasured for their storytelling which prevails despite the passage of time. This form of artwork can be found both indoors and outdoors<\/strong>, especially in churches<\/em>, palaces<\/em>, schools<\/em>, restaurants<\/em>, bars<\/em>, hospitals<\/em>, subway stations<\/em> and even in some ordinary houses.<\/p>\n\n\n

The process<\/strong> of making these beautiful hand-painted tiles is very meticulous<\/strong> and an ode to Craftsmanship<\/em><\/strong>. A tile is chosen to see if it is cracked, the good ones have a hollow sound when hit against each other.\u00a0 The drawing is done on parchment paper that is drawn with a graffiti pen and stamped with a coal pencil onto the tile. The paintwork is done with water-based paint<\/strong>, a powder that is mixed with water to work the density. <\/p>\n\n\n
