Returning for an unusual September event,\u00a0Design Miami\/Basel<\/span><\/em><\/strong> presents some of the best contemporary design<\/a><\/strong>, for an edition based on an exploration of \u2018human nature\u2019 through curated booths and large-scale installations at Messe Basel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018This year\u2019s presentations really offer an insightful snapshot of the current design market,<\/em>\u2019 says Jennifer Roberts, CEO of\u00a0Design Miami<\/em><\/strong>. For the first time, the fair will be shoppable online through new initiatives launched in the past year that expand\u00a0Design Miami<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s scope and reach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design Miami\/Basel 2021 theme: Human Nature<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Gallerists and designers responded to the 2021 edition\u2019s\u00a0theme of \u2018Human Nature\u2019, devised by curatorial director Aric Chen. It\u2019s a theme, he explains, that explores \u2018how we might rethink the relationship between humans, nature, and human nature. The question of sustainability and planetary survival is not simply technical, but also cognitive, cultural and philosophical. As it becomes increasingly clear that human-centric worldviews and approaches are no longer tenable, we want to explore how design offers possibilities for reimagining our relationship with non-human beings and intelligence in more viable ways<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme\u2019s impact is evident from the fair\u2019s entrance, where installations include Studio Drift\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Shylights\u2019, a series of multi-sensory\u00a0lighting\u00a0pieces<\/a><\/strong> inspired by the phenomenon known as nyctinasty, the movement of some plants as they respond to the onset of darkness.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among projects responding to \u2018Human Nature\u2019 is also Mathieu Lehanneur<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s \u2018State Of The World\u2019 display, a showcase of anodised aluminium sculptures representing population pyramids of different countries across the world. Using data, each\u00a0sculpture\u00a0represents the birthrate, life expectancy and history of over 140 countries. \u2018In this very particular moment in our history, I wanted to be able to embody humanity in its entirety; to be able to crystallise the large and the complex through objects<\/em>,\u2019 says Lehanneur.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Elevator by Crosby Studios founder, Harry Nuriev<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Crosby Studios<\/strong> founder\u00a0Harry Nuriev<\/strong>\u00a0presents a metallic furniture composition inspired by the aesthetic of a corrugated steel-clad elevator. Nuryev explains his fascination with the elevator, a symbol of passing through different realities, connecting spaces: \u2018It\u2019s a place where you get to be a kid again and press all the buttons, the destination unknown<\/em>,\u2019 he says. The space is fitted with silver modular furniture comprising a sofa, an armchair, and an ottoman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaping Color by Germans Ermi\u010ds<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

An expert in West Coast minimalism, Laguna Beach-based Peter Blake<\/strong> makes its\u00a0Design Miami\/Curio<\/strong> platform debut, presenting its first contemporary design<\/strong> showcase, with a site-specific, immersive installation by Amsterdam-based Latvian designer Germans Ermi\u010ds. Titled \u2018Shaping Color\u2019, the collection features new interpretations of\u00a0Ermi\u010ds\u2019 colour-driven furniture designs in glass, in new chromatic compositions ranging from blue to yellow. The installation, says Blake, hopes to elicit \u2018a phenomenological viewer experience. We hope viewers will take away a newfound appreciation for Ermi\u010ds\u2019 focus on aesthetics and material and their relationship with surrounding environments.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design by Nature by Front and Moroso<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Italian furniture<\/strong> company Moroso<\/strong> presents its new research and experimentation branch. Dubbed More-So, the company\u2019s division makes its debut at\u00a0Design Miami\/Basel<\/em><\/strong> with \u2018Design by Nature\u2019, a project by Front<\/strong>. It features a furniture collection<\/strong> (comprising seating, wooden tables and vases) inspired by nature, with faithful reproductions of three-dimensional forms such as rocks, and created using 3D scanning, milling and weaving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americana: Early Mass Modern Objects for Industry<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Chicago gallery Converso<\/strong> presents \u2018Americana: Early Mass Modern Objects for Industry\u2019, an impressive collection of early modern industrial objects gathered over three decades and featuring rare examples of mass consumption objects designed by the likes of Charles Eames, Alvar Aalto and Alexander Girard, as well as pieces by manufacturers such as Motorola and General Electric.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
