His love for\u00a0art<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0fashion<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has translated to his work as an\u00a0interior designer<\/a><\/strong>, creating a\u00a0unique style<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that no one can match. Today we take a look at Shonda Rhimes <\/span>New York City Apartment<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and his\u00a0interior design inspiration<\/a><\/strong>. The sprawling Upper East Side<\/strong> abode was suitably designed by former White House interior designer<\/strong> Michael S. Smith<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone as busy as Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong>, time and space are of the essence. The single mother of three strives to keep up with her children while simultaneously reigning supreme as one of Hollywood\u2019s<\/strong> most successful and inspiring content creators. As the driving force behind television hits like\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal,<\/em>\u00a0How to Get Away With Murder,<\/em>\u00a0and, most recently,\u00a0Bridgerton<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Inventing Anna,<\/em>\u00a0Rhimes has dreamed up dozens of dynamic, diverse, and multi-dimensional female characters<\/strong>, shifting the narratives of women and their place in the world. Her work tells stories about lives that are complex, complicated, and culture-shifting\u2014just like that of their author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be a lot to keep in mind. So, more than anything, what this impresario needs most, quite simply, is time\u2014time to write, create and continue to build her successful Shondaland media empire<\/strong>\u2014and a beautifully appointed room of her own in which to work. And that\u2019s just what she set out to give herself in her brand-new New York City apartment<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis place is really about my work life. But I came into it thinking, If I had no kids, no responsibilities, what kind of space would I create? Obviously, we did incorporate things that were necessary for the kids\u2014moms never get to think selfishly\u2014but this was really exciting for me.\u201d <\/p>\n says Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong> of the residence on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side. <\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong> enlisted AD100 designer Michael S. Smith<\/strong>, who also decorated a previous home<\/strong> for her in Los Angeles<\/strong> (AD,<\/em>\u00a0February 2019), to help realize a vision of classical beauty with touches of romance and lots of colorful flights of fancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor us, blending ideas of a romantic East Side apartment, authors of the past, and a sense of history was interesting. We wrapped it in this beautiful Chinese-style wallpaper to make it a garden,\u201d <\/p>\n\u2013 Smith explains of the decor, which is rooted in tradition yet enlivened with bursts of energy. Take, for example, the breathtakingly pretty living room. <\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Of that lush, arcadian space, Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong> enthuses, \u201cThat pattern allows for things like those incredible yellow curtains and some really bold choices in furniture. There are a lot of gilt-edged pieces in there because the wallpaper can hold all of that. The furniture can be a little bit eclectic. It\u2019s a mix of contemporary pieces and antiques, and they all work together really nicely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The apartment is full of places where Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong> can decide to work\u2014or daydream\u2014as inspiration strikes. In the living room alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Filled with favorite books<\/strong> and paintings by Black artists including Hughie Lee-Smith <\/strong>and Walter Henry Williams Jr<\/strong>., the residence pays homage to its NYC location<\/strong>. But one can\u2019t help but feel a touch of Regency-era London as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had been immersed in the romanticism of\u00a0Bridgerton<\/em>\u00a0for a while, so that had to influence some of the things that I had been thinking about. Everything sort of spills into everything else. If I\u2019m thinking about these books that we\u2019re turning into a series, then that inevitably spills into how the apartment\u2019s going to look, which inevitably spills into what goes in the scripts\u2014it all sort of spins together.\u201d<\/p>\n Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong> acknowledges. <\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

When it came to New York City<\/strong> living, another major influence<\/strong> was the home of the late Mike Nichols.<\/strong> After the enormous success of\u00a0Grey\u2019s Anatomy,<\/em>\u00a0the award-winning director contacted Rhimes in Los Angeles<\/strong> and invited her to lunch the next time she would be in New York City<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on that idea of sanctuary, Smith worked to create a space that references New York but also feels like a place apart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has this sense of being a kind of citadel. You can be in the city and swim in that energy, but then retreat. That\u2019s important for a person who has a very big interior life.\u201d<\/p>\nShonda Rhimes<\/strong><\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For Shonda Rhimes<\/em><\/strong>, the end result couldn\u2019t fit her needs more perfectly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMichael knows me really well. He understands the idea that I spend a lot of time inside my head\u2014a lot of time imagining, a lot of time where it seems like I might be being quiet and still, but really I\u2019m storytelling. So he knows that it\u2019s important to me to have rooms and spaces to sit and think, to have new places to move to just get my brain going sometimes. I\u2019m building an entire sort of universe in my mind, but I\u2019m also trying to think of a series. It\u2019s not just two hours, it\u2019s not just 30 minutes; sometimes it\u2019s 18 seasons.
