Mid-Century Modern House <\/em>By Tim Campbell<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The architect Tim Campbell <\/a><\/em><\/strong>has a particular talent<\/strong> for bringing Mid-Century Modern Houses<\/em><\/strong> back to life<\/strong>! With offices in New York <\/em><\/strong>and Los Angeles<\/em><\/strong>, Tim is best known for designing the restorations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Beverly Hills<\/em><\/strong>, this Modern House<\/em><\/strong> was originally designed in 1958 by the Modernist architect Rex Lottery <\/strong>and inspired by the work of Charlotte Perriand<\/em><\/strong>, specifically the ski lodge<\/strong> she designed in Les Arcs, France<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cShortly after it was completed it was purchased by Corinne Calvet, a French actress working in Hollywood at the time. The final owner of the home, before my work began were the surviving sons of Dr. Henry Williams and his wife Francis Williams who\u2019d lived in the house since the early 60\u2019s.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nTim Campbell at Architectural Digest<\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Tim Campbell<\/em><\/strong> had restored another Rex Lotery home in Beverly Hills<\/em><\/strong> in 2016, and the client, an avid collector of American and French mid-century furniture<\/em><\/strong>, turned to Campbell to restore the home in a thoughtful and authentic way while factoring in contemporary comforts and lifestyles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe largest challenge with any historic home is finding a way to allow the home to function in a manner that makes it relevant by today\u2019s standards.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\nTim Campbell at Architectural Digest<\/cite>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The original living room<\/strong> had a small fireplace <\/strong>which faced into a small sitting room and turned its back away from the primary seating area of the room. The architect moved the fireplace<\/strong> and opened it to the dining room opposite the living room, then added a Dean Martin\/Peggy Lee-inspired bar<\/em><\/strong> in front of the fireplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tim admit that were challenges along the way. As the original structure was of historic significance, the design brief was driven by the historic restoration guidelines established by the city. Thus, the challenge was to update the house with the modern conveniences that the contemporary market demands (larger kitchen, artistic space, theater, adequate bathrooms and bedrooms and spa environment in the master suite) while respecting the importance of the original architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renovation <\/strong>of this Modern House<\/em><\/strong> took three years, and the final result is a home that feels deeply rooted in the significant history of Beverly Hills<\/em><\/strong> and retains its original identity. The owner\u2019s reaction when he saw his new home was very satisfactory!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
