The new gallery <\/em><\/strong>is connecting local talent <\/strong>with global minds to create a new<\/strong> chapter<\/strong> of contemporary<\/strong>, collectable design <\/strong>with a distinctly Indian soul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India <\/em><\/strong>is known for its flamboyant tastes<\/strong> of Indian royalty<\/strong> which has propelled international jewellers<\/strong> to new heights of creativity<\/strong>, supplying the finest fabrics<\/strong> and embroidery <\/strong>to the biggest names in fashion<\/strong>, and exclusive furniture<\/strong> for homes, palaces and hotels across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project, based in the historic district of Colaba, Mumbai, reenvisions an equal dialogue between makers, designers and materials in the creation of furniture and interior objects.<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Tarini Jindal Handa<\/em><\/strong>, the founder <\/strong>of Aequo<\/em><\/strong>, grew up surrounded by art,<\/strong> in general. His grandmother started India\u2019s first art residency <\/strong>and her mother had found the Art Magazine in India<\/strong>. She knew since very littl<\/strong>e that she wanted to continue <\/strong>their legacy <\/strong>by focusing <\/strong>on preserving <\/strong>their crafts<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Aequo<\/strong>, a new design gallery<\/em><\/strong> in Mumbai\u2019s Colaba<\/em> district<\/strong>, is connecting local talent<\/strong> with global minds to create a new chapter of contemporary<\/strong>, collectable design<\/strong> with a distinctly Indian soul<\/strong>. It\u2019s, also, a design gallery <\/em><\/strong>where three forces <\/strong>meet with equal<\/strong> intrigue: makers<\/strong>, designers <\/strong>and materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chance meeting with designer Florence Louisy<\/em><\/strong> cemented this mission. To introduce foreign designers to their country\u2019s amazing craftsmanship<\/strong> and promote new and unexpected results<\/strong> that would not only help preserve these unique manufacturing <\/strong>methods but also open up a dialogue across cultures<\/strong>, Handa laid out the plan for Aequo, with Louisy on board as the creative director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The duo invited architect Ivan Oddos<\/em><\/strong> to reimagine the interiors<\/strong> of an old building to house the gallery, two workshops and a showroom. The generous size<\/strong> of the structure allowed natural light<\/strong> to shine softly through the double-height windows illuminating<\/strong> the depths of this monastery setting. Clean lines<\/strong>, large open spaces<\/strong> and strategically placed glass doors<\/strong> allow for easy reconfiguration. From Kota stone and marble to red terracotta, all materials used were sourced locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Aequo\u2019s debut showcase you can find a selection of pieces <\/strong>designed by Louisy that crisscross India\u2019s length and breadth<\/strong>, exploring its wealth of craft techniques<\/strong>. The mission of this new gallery <\/em><\/strong>is to invite global minds to work locally<\/strong>, adopting and creating new unique lenses and languages to revisit Indian heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
