Modern House: Mk House By Nicolas Schuybroek

A majestic modern house in the famous center of Antwerp became the ideal blank canvas for Nicolas Schuybroek. An architect proficient in designing minimal, open and fine spaces. Schuybroek was given the chance of reimagining MK House, a  12-room house for a fashion creative.
A vast deal of time was allocated for the architectural element of the home: re-imaging flows, amplification, associations within areas and most importantly, proposing direct light. the purpose was to build a timeless, warm-minimalist and sophisticated modern house in harmony with it’s past and the customer’s needs.
“The notion of apparent simplicity became a key design element in this project: it was about reinventing a certain type of minimalism and sophistication where the light, volumes, and proportions would be as important as the refined interior details and materials. The monastic appearance of the modern house is lifted by the raw textures: the wooden beam ceiling, distressed chevron oak floors, honed marble and a beautifully balanced collection of mid-century furniture pieces.” Nicolas Schuybroek
MK House has experienced a really dramatic change of craftsmanship and precise lines. Humble whitewashed walls set the backdrop to a reasonable but precious elements palette. Displayed wooden beams, distressed chevron oak floors, and loads of sharpened white marble all cooperate to create an understated touch of opulence.

Combine to all this a dramatically revised black and white staircase. The staircase not only copies the façade of this theatrical structure but unites each level, all the while acknowledging the memoir this modern house has lived over. Each area of the modern house has been superbly matched with a selection of mid-century furniture pieces. In the living room, an oversized arched sofa by furniture designer Vladimir Kagan envelopes guests. The obscure webbed lounge chair by rich woodworker, designer and furniture maker George Nakashima is a stand out item. Other iconic items include the Gio Ponti dining chairs and striking Serge Mouille lights.
