Boca do Lobo started its journey with a clear mission: to represent globally, ancient handcrafting techniques and create groundbreaking design. This year marks an extraordinary milestone birthday for us. Boca do Lobo has now inspired, honoured and celebrated design for 15 years! Because of that, 2020 has been a year of introspection, and a look back at our history and makes us such a force to reckon with, from a selection of our 15 most iconic to designs to a gathering of our 15 most exquisite design projects, and of course, the launch of the revolutionary House Of Boca do Lobo.
Now its time to highlight our accomplishments throughout our 15-year history, to showcase our greatest achievements, that helped us become the luxury design brand we are today.
Boca do Lobo was founded in 2005 and, early-on, it committed to reinterpreting ancient techniques of fine craftsmanship in order to create unexpected pieces of contemporary design.
The goal has always been the same, for the furniture designs to be inspired and accurately handcrafted in Portugal with attention to detail, passion for beauty and the pure dedication of skilled craftspeople. With the birth of Boca do Lobo, another empire was born, Covet Group, having our design brand as its first project.
100% Design is the largest and longest-running design trade event for industry professionals in the UK. From furniture and lighting to fabrics and accessories, all interior needs are catered for this exclusive design event, and in 2006 Boca do Lobo made history by making its debut in the design fair.
Boca do Lobo and Harrods worked together in 2007, when the luxury brand was presented at the department store as part of an international design exhibition.
The exhibition was such a success that it created a long term partnership that would be again celebrated in 2014 when the iconic Heritage Sideboard was chosen by Harrods to decorate the luxury store’s window display since it is one of Boca do Lobo’s ideal examples of how the mixture of traditional techniques and high-end design can create timeless pieces of furniture.
In 2008 the already iconic publication Elle Decor decided to highlight one of Boca do Lobo‘s most exquisite creations, the D. Manuel Cabinet.
This unique cabinet is inspired by the Manueline style, the Portuguese late Gothic, a style of architectural ornamentation of the first decades of the 16th century, in perfect symbiosis with innovative design and techniques. Elle Decor as always had a taste for spotting the best among the best, and this distinction is just another proof of that.
Also in 2008, Boca do Lobo embraced another groundbreaking project, by revamping the 5-star Hotel Infante Sagres, a partnership that worked so well, that even the luxury hotel‘s exclusive restaurant is named after Boca do Lobo.
Throughout the years, Boca do Lobo has become a must-visit brand, during Maison et Objet in Paris, and that started very early-on our brand’s history.
Back in 2009, Maison et Objet awarded Boca do Lobo with its “Most Innovative Brand Award“, highlighting the out-of-the-box and design challenging furniture pieces the brand is so characterized by. Also this year, we made our debut at one of the world’s biggest design stages, Architectural Digest Design Show, making such a splash that every year since we’ve been in attendance.
Always one to break the stereotypes of design, in 2010 Boca do Lobo once again outdid itself by creating a complete ice version of the iconic Diamond sideboard. This work of art was made in order to showcase Boca do Lobo‘s never-ending creativity but most importantly, its undisputed craftsmanship know-how. This year also marked the brand’s debut presence at Index Dubai, the Middle East and North Africa’s largest gathering for the design community. International and local companies transform the Dubai World Trade Centre into a creative playground for the region’s design and fit-out community. It’s the home of trends, the future of technology, a materials discovery and a buyers paradise.
2011 marked an incredible milestone for Boca do Lobo, as it was the first year the brand was in attendance during Salone del Mobile. Even though not in the main event, the brand made such a splash that it caught NellyRodi‘s trend radar, giving the consulting agency no choice but to highlight the Diamond Sideboard as a key trend of that year’s edition.
Projected to be the jewel in the crown of the Portuguese brand Boca do Lobo, the Diamond Sideboard is a reflection of the furniture jeweller’s expertise and quintessence, undoubtedly deserving its title. This opulent object, full of resources and desire, has two carefully sculpted doors that reveal a gold lined interior with a shelf and two drawers. This piece is inspired by the gothic furniture of the romantic period, with its capacity to take advantage of the power of imagination, prevision and escape, without forgetting its unique character.
2012 was a year that above all, marked Boca do Lobo‘s presence in some of the design world’s most prominent news publications.
Having not one, but two of our most exquisite pieces featured in two of the business biggest press publications, Boca do Lobo established itself as a trendsetting brand. AD Choice Germany chose to highlight the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the Pixel Cabinet, an iconic and unparalleled furniture piece that presents a ground-breaking work of pioneering design.
Widely regarded as the benchmark for luxury lifestyle magazines, How to Spend It decided to dedicate it’s August of 2012 cover to the Diamond Sideboard. Also in 2012, the Versailles Sofa made an appearance during an exhibit at the contemporary art gallery, Avant Gallery, in Miami.
Boutique Design New York (BDNY) is the leading trade fair and conference for hospitality’s boutique and lifestyle segment, serving interior design professionals in the United States, Canada and Europe, and in 2013 Boca do Lobo was in attendance for the very first time.
For two high-energy days each November, it’s the creative nexus of the industry—bringing 8,000+ designers, architects, purchasing agents, hoteliers, owners and developers together with 750+ inventive manufacturers of design elements for hospitality interiors.
Since its inauguration in 2012, Design Days Dubai has been the only fair of its kind in the Middle East and South Asia region; an exhibition dedicated to collectable and limited-edition design objects, showcasing pieces from leading international designers as well as galleries alongside up-and-coming design talent from across the world. During its 2014 edition, Boca do Lobo teamed up with Nakkash Gallery, and had on display several of the brand’s most unique pieces.
Another debut in 2014, was Boca do Lobo‘s presence at that year’s Baselworld, showcasing the Private Collection. The collection is composed of all thing revolving around high-end jewellery and watch designs, such as luxury safes and watch winders. A key element of this exhibition was the Millionaire Safe, a statement piece designed to cause an impression.
Christie’s needs no introduction. The world’s largest Auction House had an £8.4 billion turnover in 2014 and had already sold several Andy Warhol’s and CY Twombly’s works of art. In 2015, Boca do Lobo announced the auctioning of the first edition of Symphony Sideboard, through Christie’s, on the 10th of September in South Kensington, London.
The Symphony was auctioned in the prestigious auction house’s exclusive “Out of Ordinary” category – the same in which is the front door of Paul McCartney’s childhood home in Liverpool. The first Symphony model was part of an American interior designer collection, with a special preference for European art and culture. As an art connoisseur, she found in Boca do Lobo the quality and creativity she pursues in design, falling immediately in love with the Symphony’s distinct design aesthetic at first sight.
In February of 2015, one example of the Symphony sideboard was featured in the Fifty Shades of Grey Hollywood blockbuster, with a place on set in Christian Grey’s apartment. The film included seven other pieces from Boca do Lobo’s collections, embracing the main character’s personality and taste. 2015 also marked the year when Boca do Lobo‘s London Showflat first opened its doors.
With the opening of the London Showflat in the previous year, it was now time for the brand to pay homage to its birth town, by premiering the Oporto Showroom.
Better known as Covet Douro, it is the ultimate experience of lived-design specially conceived for all design lovers worldwide. An ancient three-floor waterfront mansion in Oporto located in one of the most beautiful landscapes of Europe, Douro, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2018 was all about getting back in touch with our roots, and that meant paying homage to craftsmanship. Two curated pieces of Boca do Lobo were among a few exceptional objects from Portugal which were exhibited at Homo Faber event, the first major cultural exhibition dedicated to European craftsmanship, organized by Michelangelo Foundation.
The filigree delicate jewellery technique with the Filigree mirror and the renowned hand-painted tiles, called “azulejos”, with the contemporary piece Heritage sideboard. Both pieces, from the Limited Collection by Boca do Lobo, were exhibited at the space Best of European Craftsmanship, at Sala degli Arazzi, where visitors were able to wander through exquisite objects specifically sourced for the event and observe the skill of master artisans in real-time and at close quarters.
2018 also marked the first-ever edition of the Luxury Design Craftsmanship Summit, an event where the aim was to elevate Design and craftsmanship with various initiatives, from a renowned panel of recognized names (one of which was our own Marco Costa), to live showcases, and much, much more! This was also the year when the city that never sleeps first welcomed Boca do Lobo, and other luxury brands, with the grand opening of our NYC Showroom.
Always one to venture in uncharted waters (in this case very literally), Boca do Lobo made its debut presence not only on the world of luxury boats and yachts but also in the effervescent Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, in Florida, better know as FLIBS.
Every year, the show exhibits a vast array of the industry’s latest boats and yachts of all sizes, worldwide debuts, plus a medley of marine products and accessories to enhance the nautical lifestyle.
