The Fifty Shades of Grey movie has been surrounded by a lot of buzz, good buzz, bad buzz and a little bit of both. As expected, that’s exactly what you get when you produce a film based on a highly sexual erotic novel with BDSM tendencies, that just so happens to have gotten its start as Twilight fan fiction. What was completely unexpected, however, is the latest protest one particular organization is making over the film, as it as nothing to do with its sexual atmosphere in the story.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new online campaign called was launched last week and is seeking not only a boycott of “Fifty Shades of Grey“ but also donations to support battered women. While the campaign and its supporters don’t necessarily seem to be taking a stance against the explicit BDSM content, they do claim that the film glamorizes violence against women. This seems much more like an opportunity stunt than a legitimate stance against the movie, but if it means getting donations for this noble cause, well, we advise you to do both, watch the movie and help the cause. Has you might have already noticed, everything you see on the book adaptation is consensual and, if anything, only diminishes the main male presence who spends a millionaire sum of money to get what he wants and almost turns the female submissive role on its head when she’s the one empowered by his full attention.
As of now, neither E.L. James, author of the original book series, Universal Studios or the main stars have responded to the controversy. But according to the organizers of the campaign, speaking with The Washington Times, the response has so far been miraculous. They say that they’ve received confirmation a number of contributions made to domestic violence organizations around the country, and in just six days time they’ve accrued 1,200 followers on social media.
