It takes a good dose of energy to reach the island, the last part of the trip involves a three-hour boat ride from the port of Gangneung. Designed by the architect Chanjoong Kim, the principal of Seoul-based architects The System Lab, he explains the concept behind such a spiritual building and the importance of being connected in the flow of energy “The first time I encountered this cliff-edge land near Songgotsan Mountain, I thought of a paradoxical idea to build something other than a building as architecture.”

“Because it was not a courtesy to nature to express the still yet dynamic stories of nature formed around Songgotsan Mountain for tens of thousands of years through human manipulated acts.”

The luxury resort’s rooms interior design is furnished with contemporary pieces in blue-grey stone floors and a severe white palette, curve and bend like the interior of a giant seashell. It’s no surprise that the entertainments are connected with nature, taking full advantage of the island’s natural surroundings, sea-caves, waterfalls, temples, and ancient forests.

“I wanted it to be a container of ‘energy’ rather than a building…I hope KOSMOS, which was created by combining cutting-edge design and technology, reacts with the primitive scenery of Ulleungdo ” said the architect.
