Portuguese tiles, known as Azulejo tiles, have become a national cultural landmark, and are commonly found all around the country. Curiously, they are used in both exterior and interior settings, from seats and ornamental details in the garden, to decorative wall patterns and kitchen surfaces.
Azulejo tiles have become a trend, and have been increasingly used in alternative settings, such as living rooms and bedrooms. In this case, the walls of the Infante Sagres Hotel have been complemented with two large azulejo sets. The use of tile, as a contrasting material to the regular textile, metallic or wood surfaces found in interior settings, makes for an interesting combination, opening a new type of dialogue between a space’s different elements.
