It’s an annual event: come early December we all take a break from all the holiday happiness as the color specialists at Pantone release the Pantone Color of the Year, determining a shade that they believe will set the tone (quite literally) for the year ahead. Last year gave us Ultra-Violet; in 2017, we savored Greenery.
Pantone has determined that its color of the year for 2019 is Living Coral, also known as Pantone 16-1546, a kind of pinky peachy Instagram sunset sort of color apparently based on the natural pigmentation of healthy ocean coral. This seems an unfortunate symbolism, as headlines rage about climate change and the associated destruction of reefs worldwide. Representing the fusion of modern life, Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.
In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.
“Living Coral is loud and strident, recalling cheap toilet roll colors and the sort of bridesmaids dresses that people refer to as meringues”
Night watch, afternoon and terracotta are some of the other colors that next year will be shining on their own. Either believing that a room should never allow the eye to settle in one place or that a controversial item should always exist in order to make people talk, the important is to stay true to the taste and to believe that something that is likable is never out of style. 2019’s unsettled palette of colors is simply inspirational for a fresh start, thus start off on the right foot and so the colorful adventure begins.
Next year will be all about daring choices and crucial keynotes of all true elegance that will dominate the house’s entire decoration. Vibrant details help to create the big picture.
