ART BASEL MIAMI 2022 EVENTS
Art Basel can be broken down into many exciting sectors. Here, we go through each one and list a few featured galleries and artists that are sure to inspire in 2022.
GALLERIES
As Art Basel’s main sector, Galleries are where leading international modern and contemporary art galleries exhibit their works by artists ranging from young talents to 20th-century masters. See modern NYC’s long-running 303 Gallery, San Francisco’s Berggruen Gallery, and Miami’s own David Castillo Gallery at the show.
Galleries Attending
Ammann//Gallery
Known for her unique curatorial approach, she cultivates a cutting-edge program devoted to innovation and connoisseur-ship in the fields of fine art, design, and architecture, including some of the most important artists and designers in the world like Ron Arad, Hélène Binet, Zaha Hadid, Rolf Sachs and Studio Nucleo.
Watercolour Collection by Nendo
New York gallery Friedman Benda presents a new body of work from the Tokyo-based Nendo, a collection created to impress the illusion of watercolor paintings on paper. The 18 pieces are made of folded sheets of metal finished with a technique that makes them appear like pieces of paper, then painted by hand to mimic a light blue watercolor effect.
Gallery ALL
Founded by Yu Wang and Xiao Lu, Gallery ALL is committed to a broad artistic and design dialogue. It is a curation-led, multidisciplinary gallery, presenting existing works and commissioning new ones. As one of the first design galleries in China, it is dedicated to exhibiting unique and limited-edition objects of design, art, architecture, and furnishings.
Gagosian
Gagosian is pleased to announce 100 Years, the gallery’s seventh annual group exhibition in collaboration with Jeffrey Deitch. On view during Miami Art Week at the historic Buick Building in the city’s Design District, and online at gagosian-deitch.com, 100 Years explores the interplay of past, present, and future through contemporary works in a range of mediums.
Nagel Draxler Gallery
Galerie Nagel Draxler (formerly Galerie Christian Nagel) was founded in Cologne in 1990 and operates in Cologne, Berlin, Munich and Meseberg. We are proud to be a gallery that has a history, a present and a future. An emphasis lies on an established artist generation, that has been showing with us since the beginning and whose work has been strongly influential for following generations. Our mid-career artists take part in defining the artistic discourses of our times. Finally, with a young generation, we meet the challenges of tomorrow. We see it as a privilege, to be able to give younger artists a context rooted in recent art history.
Perrotin Gallery
Emmanuel Perrotin founded his first gallery in 1990 at the age of twenty-one. He has worked closely with his roster of artists, some for more than twenty-five years, to help fulfill their ambitious projects. Perrotin has galleries in 7 cities: Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Dubai totaling approximately 7,800 square meters (84,000 square feet) of exhibition space.
Thomas Schulte
Since it was established in 1991, Galerie Thomas Schulte’s ongoing focus has been placed on nurturing, supporting, and sustaining outstanding and inspiring artistic positions in international conceptual art spanning from the 1960s to the present.
The Christian Stein Gallery
The Christian Stein Gallery, specializing in contemporary art, was founded in Turin in 1966 by Margherita Stein (alias Christian Stein). Gianfranco Benedetti will join her starting from 1971, subsequently also dealing with the activity of the offices opened in Milan starting from 1985.
David Zwirner
David Zwirner is a contemporary art gallery with locations in New York, London, Paris, and Hong Kong, and currently represents more than seventy artists and estates. The gallery has been home to innovative, singular, and pioneering exhibitions across a variety of media and genres. Active in both the primary and secondary markets, David Zwirner has helped foster the careers of some of the most influential artists working today and has maintained long-term representation of a wide-ranging, international group of artists.
CONVERSATIONS
The Conversations program features talks, panels, and discussions between artists, gallerists, curators, collectors, architects, art lawyers, critics, and more prominent members of the international art world.
MERIDIANS
Here you’ll find boundary-pushing, large-scale projects. Meridians brings enormous possibilities to Art Basel in Miami Beach, creating a vibrant platform for large-scale sculptures, installations and moving image works, as well as performance – which did not have a dedicated space at the fair until now.
NOVA
All works within the Nova sector were created within the last three years. See oil and acrylic paintings from Helena Anrather’s Julia Wachtel, mixed media landscape paintings from Charlie James Gallery’s Patrick Martinez, and African contemporary art from Afriart Gallery.
POSITIONS
See newer galleries showcasing emerging artists’ at Positions. Keep an eye out for works by Leslie Martinez (mixed media, Texas), Frieda Toranzo Jaeger (mixed media, Mexico), and Tonia Nneji (acrylic and oil paintings, Nigeria).
SURVEY
Survey highlights artworks with historical relevance. In 2022, expect works by the late “pioneer of free Jazz” Milford Graves, Hungarian artist Endre Tót, and the late American photographer Dindga McCannon.
EDITION
Editioned works, prints, and multiples are on display at Art Basel’s Edition sector. Galleries like Crown Point Press (San Francisco), Pace Prints (NYC), Paragon (London), and Polígrafa Obra Gràfica (Barcelona) will be showcasing.
KABINETT
Galleries curate displays in a separate section of their booth at Kabinett. Projects may include thematic group exhibitions, art-historical showcases, and solo presentations.
