Debut Galleries/
Design Miami/ was delighted to have welcomed two debut exhibitors to its Paris fair. Galerie Desprez-Breheret (Paris) made its debut presentation, which responded to the historic venue by evoking the aesthetic of a Parisian hôtel that was redesigned in the 1970s by a renowned decorator for a collector. The setting was furnished with seating by designer Dan Pollock, known for crafting monoxide and singular furniture carved from eco-responsible, deceased wood collected in the Californian desert, offering a raw elegance that contrasted with the ornate interiors of the mansion. Pollock’s works were complemented by pieces from Jean Touret, Joseph Savina, Odile Noll, and Pierre Paulin. Also making their first appearance was Karry Berreby (Paris), an icon of Parisian style celebrated for curating collections of unconventional and exuberant jewellery often praised by fashion editors. On the occasion of Design Miami/ Paris, her eponymous gallery presented a selection of masterful jewels by Bulgari, Piaget, and Chopard.
Design at Large/
The fair also presented a magnificent Design at Large program, which showcased works in dialogue with the historic surroundings of L’hôtel de Maisons. Select pieces from the exhibiting galleries were displayed in the house, courtyard, and throughout the beautiful gardens. Among the highlights, Galerie Patrick Seguin presented a 6×6 Demountable House designed by Jean Prouvé in 1944. It’s now considered an architectural achievement, originally serving as a temporary housing solution for those displaced in France during the aftermath of the Second World War. Other notable highlights included a pair of La Villette chairs by Philippe Starck, presented by Ketabi Bourdet, which were specially commissioned for France’s Parc de la Villette in 1985. Galerie Mitterand showcased a remarkable Lalanne piece, Ane Attelé (grand), and Galerie SCENE OUVERTE featured Vincent Dubourg’s Delta, a striking work that blended sculpture, shelter, and architecture.
Special Institutional Project/
Paulin Paulin Paulin and Mobilier National (Paris) jointly presented an ensemble of furniture designed by Pierre Paulin for Président François Mitterrand. These pieces were prototyped with the Mobilier National and offered as a limited edition by Paulin, Paulin, Paulin. Mobilier National and Paulin Paulin Paulin shared the same ambition, which was to preserve, showcase, and make available to the public the works of Pierre Paulin, along with the craftsmanship of the Atelier de Recherche et de Création (ARC). It was through the ARC that Pierre Paulin created some of his most iconic pieces, which were prototyped by the national manufacturers.
Design Miami/ Paris x Furniture Archive/
Furniture Archive, a platform and brand catering to design enthusiasts, collaborated with Design Miami/ to create a limited capsule of apparel and accessories in honour of the inaugural event. The collection’s graphics showcased the Hôtel de Maisons. Furniture Archive’s goal was to spotlight the Parisian influence on the design and cultural significance of the 18th-century building in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The Design Miami/ x Furniture Archive collection, which included a t-shirt, hooded sweatshirt, and zip tote bag, was released on Thursday, October 19th at 10 a.m. PST, exclusively on Basic. Space.
Miami Design District presented Expression. Service. Essence. by Samuel Ross/
On the occasion of Design Miami/ Paris, Miami Design District presented Expression. Service. Essence. by Samuel Ross, a prototype bench set to go on show in the Design District during Design Miami/ 2023 this December. In a society that is often connected through digital surfaces, the functional sculpture encourages physical engagement: allowing viewers to transition from actor to protagonist through the basic acts of sitting, standing, leaning and lurching.
Upcoming Fair/
The 19th edition of Design Miami/ runs December 6-10, 2023, with Preview Day on December 5. Taking place in its established location at Pride Park, opposite the Miami Beach Convention Center, the fair will feature over 40 gallery and Curio exhibitions, presented alongside a rich program of partnerships, collaborations and design talks. Programming will respond to this year’s theme, Where We Stand, as selected by Curatorial Director Anna Carnick, a celebration of design inspired by place, community, and heritage—and the beauty and power that can be drawn from our most intimate, rooted connections.
