The surprising Jay-Z‘s office interiors have the signature of Willo Perron, Los Angeles–based designer, creative director, and partner in the firm Perron-Roettinger.
A SPACE TO THINK, TALK AND CREATE
In the opposite of what most people might expect, Willo Perron‘s design for the entertainment giant Roc Nation has little to do with razzle-dazzle. Perron explains that he was looking for the exact opposite idea of having “music blaring and video screens everywhere”.
Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, the founder of Roc Nation, has known the designer Willo Perron for about a decade. They have collaborated on everything from live performances to album packaging to home design. Perron confirms that Jay-Z has always given him plenty of freedom to explore and develop the most intriguing concept. The only limits Willo had on this project have been the number of desks and offices.
“I wanted to create a zen environment conducive to ideas and conversation, a space where you can actually think.”

The entire office is done in neutral tones and the only splash of color you’ll see are the houseplants, whether in the lounge cafe bar, the dining/meeting area, and between desks or in the corners of each room.
LESS PREDICTABLE, MORE EXPERIMENTAL
In Jay-Z‘s office, as throughout the headquarters, artwork by mostly African American artists resounds against a backdrop of muted plaster walls and elegant glass screens. Unlike Roc Nation‘s art program in Manhattan, which relies primarily on instantly recognizable, high-profile names, L.A. features more emerging talent.
“We wanted something less predictable (…) This felt more experimental and more appropriate for L.A. It’s all about the vanguard of culture.”

Jay-Z‘s private office, in particular, is crammed with design treasures – a Charlotte Perriand desk, a Marcel Breuer lamp, a Gio Ponti mirror and seating from Oscar Niemeyer, Erberto Carboni and Afra and Tobia Scarpa – all arranged in vignettes with a bespoke, homey feel.
Perron raised the level of sophistication while maintaining the largely monochromatic color palette and a ubiquitous touch of understated luxury.
