Studio Marco Piva: Italian Design Between Architecture, Art and Emotion

Some designers create spaces. Others create a language through which architecture, material and emotion can communicate. Studio Marco Piva belongs to the latter.

From landmark hotels in Milan and Venice to contemporary residences and private villas across the world, its portfolio reveals an unmistakably Italian sensitivity to proportion, materiality and atmosphere. Yet there is no single formula. Every project begins with its context and develops its own identity a philosophy that has transformed Studio Marco Piva into an international expression of contemporary Italian design.

The Story of Studio Marco Piva

Ceo Marco Piva

Marco Piva graduated from the Polytechnic of Milan and became part of Italy’s experimental design landscape through Studiodada Associati before establishing Studio Marco Piva in 1992.

His journey has crossed architecture, interior design and industrial design, with research remaining central to the practice. In 2002, Marco Piva established Atelier Design within the studio as a space dedicated to research and development.

Today, Studio Marco Piva operates from Milan with an international presence, approaching projects as an experimental laboratory where architects, designers and specialists work across different scales.

This multidisciplinary spirit defines its identity.

Material research, technology and stylistic freedom come together in what the studio describes as a fluid and functional design language. Rather than imposing an aesthetic regardless of location, Studio Marco Piva studies culture, architecture and context before developing each concept.

The result is a portfolio that can move confidently from a historic Milanese palazzo to a contemporary villa in Beverly Hills without losing its creative identity.

Designing Experiences Beyond the Hotel Room

Hospitality has become one of the defining chapters of Studio Marco Piva.

Its portfolio includes the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, Gran Meliá Palazzo Cordusio, Radisson Collection Palazzo Nani Venice and several other significant international hospitality projects.

At the Radisson Collection Palazzo Touring Club Milan, the studio transformed the historic Palazzo Bertarelli former headquarters of the Touring Club Italiano into a five-star hotel. Architecture and interiors were developed around the concept of travel, preserving the building’s cultural character while introducing a contemporary hospitality experience.

Another Milan project, the Radisson Collection Hotel Santa Sofia, explores a different identity. Here, Studio Marco Piva developed an urban language combining the character of a metropolitan loft with the comfort expected from a five-star hotel. Large windows, dark architectural frames and a palette of blues, reds and greys give the interiors a distinct rhythm.

These projects reveal an essential element of the studio’s philosophy: hospitality design should create memory.

Architecture Made for Living

residencial project

In residential architecture, Studio Marco Piva considers more than the building itself. The surrounding social and historical context, the needs of future residents and the relationship with the environment all become part of the design process.

Projects such as Princype and Torre Seta in Milan illustrate this broader approach to contemporary urban living.

The objective is not simply to create visually impressive residences. It is to develop environments capable of supporting modern lifestyles while preserving a meaningful relationship with their location. Architecture, technology and interior design therefore operate together.

This approach brings Studio Marco Piva close to the world of craftsmanship. Different disciplines, but the same understanding: character emerges through detail.

Bespoke Interiors With a Personal Identity

The private residences of Studio Marco Piva reveal perhaps the most intimate expression of its design philosophy.

The studio describes its luxury homes as bespoke projects conceived around the lifestyle of those who will inhabit them. Creativity becomes a service to individuality rather than an aesthetic imposed upon the client.

A private villa in Ankara demonstrates this beautifully. Spread across five levels, the residence incorporates family spaces, guest areas, a home theatre, library, spa, gym and swimming pool. Italian furnishings sit alongside custom-designed elements, while fabrics, carpets and silk wallpapers contribute to a layered sensory experience.

In Beverly Hills, another private villa takes a different direction. Marble, leather and glass are celebrated through their natural textures, while the interiors maintain a strong visual relationship with the surrounding Los Angeles landscape.

This ability to give materials an expressive role is fundamental to Studio Marco Piva.

Designing Through Material, Culture and Emotion

Across hospitality, residential architecture and luxury homes, one principle remains constant: design must respond to its environment while creating an experience of its own.

For Studio Marco Piva, marble is not merely a finish. Light is not simply functional. Furniture is not an afterthought. Each becomes part of a wider composition in which architecture, interior design and human experience intersect.

That philosophy has allowed Studio Marco Piva to move between historic buildings, contemporary hotels, urban residences and highly personalized private homes while maintaining an unmistakable commitment to Italian design culture.
